Church of Cristo del Valle, Baroque church in San Carlos del Valle, Spain
The Church of Cristo del Valle is a baroque structure built with a Greek cross plan and an octagonal dome at its center. Four corner towers with spires frame the building and create a distinctive outline when viewed from the plaza.
Construction took place between 1713 and 1729 on the site of an earlier sanctuary called Santa Elena. The new building was erected following local tradition that a miraculous Christ figure had appeared at that location.
The church displays two main facades with intricate stone reliefs, including one depicting Christ performing the miracle of the thieves.
The church sits at the edge of the Plaza Mayor, making it straightforward to find and access. The best views of the facades and towers come when you walk around the church or stand in the plaza itself.
The exterior walls combine exposed brick with stone in a deliberate pattern that organizes the visual composition. Tuscan columns line the lower level while spiral columns decorate the upper level, creating a layered effect.
