Castle of Belmonte de Campos

The Castle of Belmonte de Campos is a medieval fortress built on elevated terrain with defensive walls, multiple towers, and an arched gateway displaying period architecture. The structure exhibits classic military design with fortified positions strategically arranged for control over the surrounding landscape.

Juan Manuel, Marquis of Villena, ordered the reconstruction of the castle in the mid-15th century and later transferred ownership to the Manrique family. This handover marked a shift in control that shaped the property's use under new leadership for generations to come.

The fortress reflects military design traditions of Castile, with architectural features linked to builder Gómez de Isla that connect it to other regional strongholds. These design connections show how medieval fortifications in the area followed similar building principles across multiple locations.

The municipality of Belmonte de Campos has managed half of the property since 2017 and allows visits only by advance reservation. Planning your visit ahead ensures you can access the grounds when you arrive.

Local residents purchased the grounds in the late 1800s and repurposed the structure as a dovecote and quarry for construction stone. This later reuse reveals how fortifications eventually became practical resources for nearby communities.
