The military fortress stands on a hill, featuring defensive walls, towers, and artillery embrasures as part of a strategic triangle of fortifications.
The castle's first documented mention dates to June 1140, when Infanta-Queen Sancha Raimundez transferred Villalba to the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem.
The construction displays architectural elements from the 12th to 15th centuries, incorporating Cistercian-style vaulted ceilings across two distinct levels.
While the exterior grounds remain open to visitors, the interior sections stay closed due to progressive deterioration of the structure.
Until 2001, certain sections of this medieval fortress served as storage facilities for local cheese production.
