Castle of Villalba de los Alcores
Castle of Villalba de los Alcores, Medieval defensive castle in Villalba de los Alcores, Spain
Castle of Villalba de los Alcores is a medieval fortress sitting on a hill with defensive towers and openings for cannon fire. The structure was part of a strategic triangle of fortifications built to control the surrounding area.
The first documented record dates to June 1140 when Infanta-Queen Sancha Raimundez handed Villalba to the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. This connection to a military-religious order shaped the fortress's importance for centuries.
The structure shows building styles from the 12th to 15th centuries with Cistercian features like vaulted ceilings across two levels. You can see these medieval details in the remaining walls and how the fortress was designed for defense.
The outer grounds are open to visitors, but the interior remains closed due to ongoing damage to the structure. It is best to wear comfortable shoes to walk around the site and view it from different angles.
Until 2001, certain rooms in this fortress were used as storage for local cheese production. It shows how a medieval military structure adapted over time to serve the everyday needs of the community.
