Torreón de Lozoya, Medieval defense tower in Plaza de San Martín, Segovia, Spain.
The Torreón de Lozoya is a medieval defensive tower on Plaza de San Martín, standing about 25 meters tall with a base of roughly 8 by 9 meters. The structure features strategically positioned windows and today serves as a contemporary art exhibition space with a bookstore located in its Renaissance courtyard.
The tower was built between the 15th and 16th centuries as a fortified structure and originally served as an armory. It was equipped with military defense features such as arrow slits to protect the area.
The tower carries marks made during the Spanish Civil War when students used it as an observation post. These traces tell the story of the people who worked here during that turbulent period.
The tower is located at Plaza de San Martín 5 in central Segovia and is easily accessible on foot. Visitors should note that the interior spaces are relatively modest in size and may have limited hours depending on exhibitions.
Beneath the tower's foundations lie remains of a Roman caldarium, indicating earlier settlements at this location. These archaeological layers show that the site has been significant since ancient times.
