Plaza Mayor, Main square in historic Segovia, Spain
Plaza Mayor is the central square of Segovia, surrounded on several sides by covered arcaded walkways that frame an open paved space. The town hall and the Juan Bravo Theatre stand along its edges, giving the square a formal but approachable character.
The square took shape in the 17th century on the site of a former trading street, the Calle de la Cintería, where merchants sold cloth and goods. Over time it grew into the civic and social center of Segovia.
The square is the natural meeting point of the city, where people sit over coffee, stroll, or simply linger in the sun. On weekends it fills with families, musicians, and street performers who bring the open space to life.
The arcades provide shade and shelter throughout the day, making the square comfortable to explore in most weather. A tourist information office nearby hands out free city maps and can help orient first-time visitors.
The square sits directly beside the Cathedral of Segovia, so the two buildings stand almost side by side with very little space between them, which is unusual in Spanish city planning. This closeness came about because the cathedral was built on the site of an earlier church that already stood at the edge of the square.
