Church of San Justo

Church of San Justo, Medieval church in Segovia, Spain.

The Church of San Justo is a medieval place of worship in Segovia built with a twelve-sided floor plan and decorated column capitals. These carved capitals feature birds and human figures that display the craftsmanship of medieval stonemasons.

The building takes its name from Saint Justo and his young companion Pastor, two early martyrs from the era of Christian persecution. Their names have been venerated since the early centuries of Christianity as symbols of faith during difficult times.

The building exhibits Romanesque and early Gothic elements that reflect how Spanish religious architecture evolved during the medieval period. This blend of styles is visible in the capitals and window designs throughout the interior.

Visiting is free and the church is actively used by the local faith community. The interior lighting changes throughout the day and seasons, so visiting at different times can offer different perspectives on the decorated capitals and architectural details.

White storks build their nests on the bell tower, creating an unexpected connection between wildlife and religious architecture. Many local residents consider this annual return of the birds a distinctive feature of the location.
