Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Expectación

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Expectación is a Baroque church laid out as a Latin cross with a central nave and side chapels featuring semicircular niches. A decorated dome tops the interior, painted with images of the four evangelists.

The main structure was built over several decades beginning in 1608, with the construction phase concluding in 1643. The tower and choir section followed later, added between 1664 and 1674 to complete the church.

The church became a pilgrimage center after the arrival of the Santo Cristo de Burgos in 1637, a sacred image that still draws visitors seeking spiritual connection. People gathered here to venerate this religious treasure and the town grew around this sacred purpose.

The church opens for religious services throughout the week, which is the ideal time to visit and observe its interior decoration. Arrive early to have space to look around comfortably and appreciate the details.

The main altarpiece was carved by Francisco de Briones in the 18th century and displays remarkable detail in its religious scenes and ornamental design. This work represents a high point of late Baroque altar craftsmanship.
