Castillo de Cuevas de Almanzora

Castillo de Cuevas de Almanzora is a fortress in Cuevas del Almanzora featuring a rectangular layout with defensive walls and four cylindrical bastions. At its center stands a two-story palace building that now houses the municipal library and archaeological museum.

Pedro Fajardo y Chacón initiated construction in 1507 and converted an existing Muslim tower into the main keep. This transformation followed the Christian reconquest and marked the region's shift from Muslim to Christian control.

The fortress now houses a contemporary art museum and municipal collections that reflect the region's artistic heritage. This repurposing shows how the place has become a center for cultural activities and artistic display.

The site is easy to explore on foot and clearly organized with sections including the municipal library and art museum areas. Plan about two hours to view the fortress, collections, and exhibition spaces at a relaxed pace.

The five-story main tower retains its original Muslim architecture with a distinctive truncated pyramid design. This structural feature reveals how an early Muslim fortress element was later integrated into the Christian fortification.
