Al Pueblo del Dos de Mayo de 1808

Al Pueblo del Dos de Mayo de 1808, Public monument in Plaza de España, Madrid, Spain

Al Pueblo del Dos de Mayo de 1808 is a work of art in bronze and limestone located on Plaza de España in Madrid. It depicts a winged figure holding a flag positioned above a soldier, a cannon, a child, and fallen bodies below.

The sculpture commemorates the Madrid uprising against Napoleonic forces on May 2, 1808, which marked the beginning of the Spanish Independence War. This revolt became a defining moment of resistance against invasion.

On May 2nd, people gather at the monument to honor those who defended Madrid during French occupation. The site becomes a focal point for remembering this act of resistance.

The monument stands in a garden area near the Temple of Debod with access via multiple public transportation options. Its central location in Madrid makes it easily reachable and simple to visit.

The monument was initially installed with a plaster cast painted green in 1908. The actual bronze sculpture was completed and mounted later that same year.
