Parador Nacional Príncipe de Viana, Medieval palace in Olite, Spain
The Parador Nacional Príncipe de Viana is a palace that occupies part of the Old Palace within the Royal Palace complex in Olite, standing beside Santa Maria Church. It contains 43 rooms, a restaurant, conference facilities, and provides access to the region's wine-related activities.
The palace dates from the 15th century and served as a royal residence until Navarra was conquered by Castile in 1512. The building gradually fell into decline following this conquest and lost its original function.
The building displays French Gothic style with stone walls, stained glass windows, and arcades that define its interior spaces. These architectural features create a sense of the medieval period throughout.
The building sits about 45 kilometers south of Pamplona and is relatively easy to reach from the city. Visitors should allow time to explore the rooms and architecture, as well as visit the adjacent church.
The palace stands on foundations from the 7th century, when Visigoth King Suintla built the first fortification at this strategic location. This ancient foundation shows how long this site has served as a control point in the region.
