Iglesia de Santa María de la Alhambra, Catholic church in Granada, Spain
Iglesia de Santa María de la Alhambra is a Catholic church in Granada, Spain. It has a tall square tower on the left and a lower rectangular wing to the right, with pale brick walls and decorative patterns of darker stones and tiles on the lower wing's facade.
The church was built between 1581 and 1618 on the site of the main mosque of the Alhambra. It was designed by Juan de Herrera and completed by Ambrosio de Vico.
The church is dedicated to Saint Mary and serves as a place of worship for the local Catholic community. During Holy Week, the brotherhood carries the statue of the Virgin of Sorrows in procession on a throne that copies the arches of the Court of the Lions.
The church is located inside the Alhambra complex, so you need a ticket to enter the monument. Once inside, it is a short walk from the main entrance, and the area can be steep in places, so wear comfortable shoes.
The church houses a baroque altarpiece with twisted columns added in 1671, which contains sculptures by Alonso de Mena. The writer Federico García Lorca belonged to the brotherhood associated with this church.
