The chapel was built in the 7th century using materials salvaged from the nearby Roman settlement of Nertobriga. Its design shows influences from late Roman and early Christian periods, later modified with medieval additions.
The central niche housed a statue of Saint Michael created by sculptor Lorenzo Mercadante de Bretaña before its transfer to the National Art Museum of Catalonia.
The hermitage is located about six kilometers northeast of Fregenal de la Sierra in the area known as Huerta de San Miguel. The site sits on a hillside and visitors should come prepared for a rural setting with limited facilities nearby.
