Puente Romano

Puente Romano, Ancient stone bridge in Andújar, Spain.

Puente Romano is a stone bridge that spans 310 meters across the Guadalquivir River with a granite construction featuring multiple arches. The massive stone supports carry the weight of the structure and define how the river looks at this point.

Construction began during the Roman period, and later Moorish-influenced changes expanded the structure over time. These modifications show how different civilizations shaped the building across the centuries.

The bridge has linked the two sides of Andújar for many centuries and shows in its appearance the building techniques of different periods. Pedestrians crossing it can see how different styles sit side by side and shape the character of this place.

You can enter and cross the bridge directly from the city center on foot with good access throughout. The views of the river and surrounding landscape make a walk there pleasant, especially if you take your time.

Beneath the many arches lie 16 original Roman foundations that have survived thousands of years. These ancient supports form the backbone of the structure and show how durable Roman building methods were.
