Ermita de la Virgen de Gracia, Archidona, ermita de Archidona, España
The Ermita de la Virgen de Gracia is a small religious chapel located in Archidona in the province of Málaga and is protected as a cultural heritage site. The building features simple architecture with solid construction and houses historical elements including columns from Roman and Visigothic times.
The building dates to the 9th or 10th century and was originally constructed as a mosque, one of only two surviving from that era in the entire province of Málaga. When Archidona became part of the Crown of Castile in the 15th century, the mosque was transformed into a Christian church.
The chapel is dedicated to Virgen de Gracia, a figure to whom many locals direct their prayers and devotion. During festivals and celebrations, people gather here to honor this tradition and participate in processions and prayers together.
The chapel is easily accessible by foot from central Archidona and is open to visitors most days of the week. The early morning and late afternoon are ideal times to visit, as the light is soft and the space remains peaceful with fewer people present.
The building was originally a mosque and is one of only two surviving mosques from the 9th or 10th century in the entire province of Málaga. This rarity makes it a special testimony to the complex religious and cultural history of the region.
