Torronsuo National Park, National park in Tammela, Finland
Torronsuo National Park is a large bog reserve in Tammela, southern Finland, centered on one of the biggest raised bogs in the country. Duckboard trails cross the open mire, connecting it to small lakes and patches of birch and pine forest around the edges.
People lived near this area as far back as the Stone Age, with remains found close to Lake Talpianjärvi. The bog itself formed gradually over thousands of years as plant material built up and slowly turned into peat.
The park is well known among birdwatchers for the cranes that gather here during migration, especially in autumn. Walking slowly along the duckboard paths gives visitors a close view of these birds without disturbing them.
The marked trails vary in length, so both short walks and longer outings are possible without any particular preparation. In winter, when the ground freezes, many of the same routes become suitable for cross-country skiing.
From certain points on the duckboard trails, the open bog stretches so far that no trees are visible in any direction, which is an unusual sight in a country otherwise covered by forest. This feeling of open space in the middle of Finland surprises many first-time visitors.
