Siikakankaan lentokenttä, Military airfield in Ruovesi, Finland
Siikakankaan lentokenttä is a former military airfield featuring a circular landing area approximately 1,000 meters in diameter, located within dense forest near Highway 66 in the Pirkanmaa region. The terrain retains its distinct oval shape despite decades of abandonment and natural growth.
Established in 1935 as an emergency landing site, the airfield became an active Finnish Air Force base during World War II with several hangars and barracks. After the war it gradually fell out of military use until the Finnish Defence Forces repurposed it as a storage facility.
The site carries memories of its military past through a memorial that acknowledges the role of the Ilmailuvarikko 2 unit in national defense. Local residents recognize it as part of their region's connection to aviation history.
The site can be accessed from nearby Highway 66 and is surrounded by accessible woodland that allows visitors to explore freely. Best visited during dry weather since forest soil can be muddy and soft underfoot, requiring sturdy footwear.
The distinctive circular shape remains visible from aircraft as a pattern formed by different forest growth and vegetation on the former landing and parking areas. This aerial perspective reveals the structure in ways impossible to detect from ground level.
