Ylöjärven kaivos, Copper mine in Takamaa, Finland.
Ylöjärven kaivos is a former mine in the Takamaa area that spread across a large site and contained multiple extraction areas for copper, tungsten, gold, and arsenic. Today the Finnish Defence Research Agency uses the grounds and has established its facilities there.
The mine started in 1943 extracting ores with high copper content and other valuable minerals. Operations stopped in 1966, after which the site was transformed for other uses.
Mining operations shaped the local community and made this place a major center for mineral extraction in the region. The work drew people to settle here and created a distinct identity for the surrounding villages.
The grounds are not open to the public today since they are used by a government agency. Visitors should inquire beforehand about any tours or special access arrangements that might be available.
The mine left behind enormous tailings areas that stretched across large tracts and contained specialized deposits. These mounds still show traces of intensive extraction work today and stand as a silent witness to the former mining industry.
