Tree Mountain, Environmental artwork in Ylöjärvi, Finland.
Tree Mountain is an environmental artwork in Ylöjärvi that extends 420 meters long and 270 meters wide while rising 38 meters high. It contains roughly 11,000 pine trees arranged in mathematical patterns across the landscape.
The project was created in the 1990s following the Rio Earth Summit and transformed a former gravel pit into a forest. The Finnish government backed this environmental restoration effort as a response to global sustainability concerns.
The trees carry the names of individual planters, creating a personal connection between people and the land through lasting records. Visitors can feel part of a collective effort to restore the natural world.
The site is accessible for walking and offers views from the base to the top of the hill where visitors can survey the entire planted area. Comfortable footwear is recommended since the slope is made of sand and can shift underfoot.
The trees are arranged using a mathematical formula based on the golden section and pineapple pattern, creating an organized system that will evolve into a natural forest. This approach combines artistic design with natural development in an unexpected way.
