Kanttila

Kanttila is a wood and stone building with protected facades from early 1900s renovations, located at the intersection of Minna Canth's katu and Kuninkaankatu streets. The house retains its original character and shows the typical architectural features of that period.

Built in the 19th century, the house served as the home and business location of writer Minna Canth from 1879 until 1897. Its earlier role as a commercial space reflects its importance in the city's development.

The house served as a meeting place for artists and writers who gathered to discuss art and social matters. This role made it an important center for intellectual exchange in Finnish cultural life.

The house is located about 450 meters from Kuopio Market Square, making it easily accessible on foot. Guided tours last about one hour and provide a detailed look at the rooms and their history.

Before its life as a literary hub, the building housed one of the first bookstores in Southern Finland during the early decades of the 1800s. This earlier chapter shows how the house changed its purpose over time.
