Old Kuopio Museum, Historical museum complex in Kuopio, Finland
The Old Kuopio Museum is a complex of eleven wooden buildings that display how people from different social classes lived and arranged their homes from 1800 to 1930. Each house shows furnishings, daily objects, and room layouts typical of its period and inhabitants' social position.
The museum block began taking shape in the 1600s, with the oldest standing building from the late 1700s and later additions from the 1800s. These structures were relocated and preserved here to create a living timeline of domestic life across the centuries.
One of the houses focuses on the life of author Minna Canth, who advocated for women's rights and social change in the 1800s. Visitors can see her living spaces and personal objects that reveal how she lived during that time.
Most buildings are accessible at ground level, though some interior spaces have narrow stairs or steps. Plan enough time to walk through all the houses and take in the details of their furnishings and layouts at a comfortable pace.
An apothecary building was integrated into the complex during the 1990s and displays historical medicines and medical tools from earlier times. The collection offers surprising insights into past healing practices and how treatment methods have changed over the centuries.
