Kuopio Market Hall, Art Nouveau market hall in Kuopio, Finland
Kuopio Market Hall is a brick building in Art Nouveau style located in the city center. Inside, around 30 permanent vendors sell fresh fruits and vegetables, fish products, local specialties, and handmade items throughout the week.
Architect Johan Victor Strömberg designed the building in 1902 to meet the growing demand for regulated food sales in the expanding city. A 1914 expansion added a meat inspection center, which later transformed into a specialized fish market.
Merchants here maintain Finnish food traditions by selling regional specialties like fish pies and Savonian delicacies. The space shows how locals preserve and share their culinary heritage with visitors.
The best time to visit is on weekday mornings when the selection is largest and crowds are smaller. Entry is free, and the building is easy to access, with wheelchair access through the adjacent cafe.
The building displays typical Art Nouveau details in its brick facade and window decorations. These architectural features make it a notable example of early 1900s urban design in the region.
