Kuopio City Library, Public library in Kuopio, Finland.
Kuopio City Library is a public library spread across a main building and 13 branch locations throughout the municipality. The collection contains more than 595,000 items, and three mobile library vehicles extend services to communities across the Northern Savonia region.
The library was founded in 1872 and moved to its current main building, designed by architect Matti Hakala, in 1967. In 2021, a new Hila building was constructed to create a physical connection between the library and the neighboring Kuopio Museum.
The library integrates into the Kantti Quarter, where it stands alongside the Kuopio Museum, and visitors experience both spaces as part of the same cultural zone. Walking through the area, you notice how the two institutions are positioned to encourage people to move between them and explore what each has to offer.
The main building and branch locations are spread throughout the municipality, and mobile library vehicles bring services to areas that might otherwise be harder to reach. Visitors should check ahead to find the nearest branch or when the mobile service comes to their area.
The Hila building, opened in 2021, physically connects the library with the museum in a way that allows visitors to move between book and exhibition spaces without leaving the grounds. This merger creates a rare example of how two cultural institutions actually grow together rather than simply standing side by side.
