Suomussalmi Church

Suomussalmi Church is a place of worship built from concrete and brick with a single nave characterized by paired windows and sloping buttresses. The structure features smooth ends and accommodates around 850 people in its interior.

An earlier place of worship designed by Carl and Jacob Rijfin was destroyed in 1939 during the Battle of Suomussalmi. This church replaced that lost structure and now stands as a testament to that period.

The church displays artistic works that bring its interior to life. Bruno Tuukkanen created a fresco depicting Jesus' life above the altar, while Jooseppi Manninen crafted wooden figures of the Apostles.

The building is easy to enter and offers spacious conditions for visitors in its interior. The clear design allows good sightlines and straightforward navigation during your visit.

The building has a separate stone bell tower containing bells from different decades. These bells were originally taken from the Church of Kurkijoki and give the place a hidden history.
