Hepoköngäs

Hepoköngäs is a waterfall in a protected nature reserve near Puolanka that plunges approximately 18 meters downward into the Heinijoki River. The water drops with a width of about 5 meters, creating a dramatic visual display.

The nature reserve around the waterfall received official protection status in 1956 to preserve this location and its riverside setting. This action ensured the area would remain protected from development and maintain its natural character.

The name comes from Finnish words, with köngäs meaning steep rapids that boats cannot navigate. This term perfectly describes what visitors observe when they stand before the falling water.

You can reach the waterfall by walking a 600-meter trail from the parking area, making it accessible for most visitors. Summer cafes and picnic spots are available on-site for rest and refreshment.

Water flow changes significantly depending on the season, with the strongest currents occurring during spring floods. During this period, the water rushes down with much greater force, transforming the entire appearance.
