Turjanlinna, Historical museum and house in Suomussalmi, Finland.
Turjanlinna is a literary museum on the shore of Lake Kiantajärvi in Suomussalmi, dedicated to Finnish writer Ilmari Kianto. The grounds include a traditional sauna and an old storage building, the only two original structures still standing on the property.
The property was almost entirely destroyed in the Winter War of 1939 when Finnish forces withdrew from the area. Only the sauna and the storage building survived and were later kept as a reminder of that conflict.
Ilmari Kianto wrote about everyday life in the Kainuu region, and his home reflects that direct connection to the surrounding forests and water. The objects on display give a concrete sense of how he lived and what he valued.
The museum sits in a remote lakeside spot and is mainly reached by boat, so it is worth checking transport options in advance depending on the season. As the site is largely outdoors, dressing for the weather is a good idea.
After his death, Ilmari Kianto was buried on Niettussaari Island, which sits just across the water from the museum. This means the writer rests within sight of the place where he once lived and worked.
