Olvassuo Strict Nature Reserve

The 71-square-kilometer reserve contains extensive peat bogs, lakes, ponds, eskers, wooded dunes, and ancient shore banks across its northern landscape.

The Finnish government established this nature reserve in 1981 to protect the diverse mire ecosystems and old-growth coniferous forests of the region.

The reserve maintains a balance between conservation efforts and traditional reindeer husbandry practices that continue in the protected area.

Visitors conducting scientific research must obtain permits from Metsähallitus, the governing authority responsible for managing the nature reserve.

The site hosts vulnerable plant species including the early marsh-orchid and marsh saxifrage, along with migratory birds such as bean geese and whooper swans.
