Oulu TV Mast, Broadcasting tower in Kiiminki, Finland
Oulu TV Mast is a broadcasting tower rising 326 meters high, fitted with four strobe lights that ensure aircraft safety near Oulu Airport. The structure stands on Isohalmeen hill about 12 kilometers south of Kiimingin village and serves as the main broadcasting station for the entire region.
The current mast was built in 1993 and replaced an older 323-meter structure that stood in Kiimingin. The previous tower was brought down in 1994 through a precise demolition using controlled explosives managed by military engineers.
The mast forms part of the broadcasting infrastructure that serves northern Finland and allows people across the region to receive radio and television programs. Communities in remote areas depend on such facilities to stay connected with local news and entertainment services.
The structure sits on a hilltop and is visible from the surrounding landscape, making it a useful landmark to orient yourself in the region. The remote location means you will need a car if you want to explore the area.
The demolition of the previous mast was a military operation where explosives experts brought down the structure in a controlled manner. It was a notable achievement in precision demolition technology for the time.
