Koitelinkoski, Rapids and recreation area in Ylikylä, Finland
Koitelinkoski is a rapids area that runs for several kilometers along the Kiiminkijoki river in the Ylikylä district. Multiple islands are linked by suspension bridges, with the water dividing into separate channels throughout the landscape.
The area once served as a key route for timber transport in Finland during earlier centuries. It was later developed into a tourist destination where visitors could experience the river landscape.
The Koiteli Elää association organizes music festivals and events that bring together local communities along the riverbanks throughout the year.
Visitors can light campfires at several designated locations with firewood available for outdoor cooking. A summer café on one of the islands serves drinks and snacks, making it convenient to rest during your visit.
During winter, the flowing water creates natural ice formations along the rapids that reshape the landscape. In spring, breaking ice sheets produce a dramatic transformation as the river's force becomes especially visible.
