Kastelli community centre, Educational and community complex in Kontinkangas, Finland.
Kastelli Community Centre is a large building complex in the Kontinkangas district with schools, a library, sports halls, and a youth center all under one roof. The facility spreads across several connected buildings and provides space for education, sports, and recreation.
The complex opened in 2014 following a design competition held by the City of Oulu in 2009. The project came about through a public-private partnership and set new standards for sustainable school buildings in the region.
The central lobby brings together different functions and creates an open meeting place for the community. Here students, families, and neighbors gather for everyday activities and special events.
The facility has multiple sports halls, including a large one with about 800 seats for basketball and volleyball competitions. Visitors should know that different areas are open at different times for different groups.
The complex was the first Nordic building to receive a special environmental certification. The project demonstrates innovations in designing school spaces that adapt to different learning styles.
