Hupisaaret Islands, City park in Myllytulli, Finland
The Hupisaaret Islands are a city park in Oulu, Finland, made up of several small islets connected by white wooden bridges. The park contains ponds, streams, planted areas, and a central playground for children.
One of the islands, Lasaretinsaari, once housed a provincial hospital that was later converted into a residence after Oulu became the provincial capital in 1776. The island's name still reflects that medical past, as "lasaretti" means hospital in Finnish.
The open-air theater in the park hosts performances during the warmer months, drawing locals and visitors to watch shows surrounded by trees and water. It has become a meeting point for people looking to spend an evening outdoors without leaving the city.
All the islands are linked by walkable bridges, so the entire park can be explored on foot without retracing your steps. A café near the playground area is open during the summer season and offers a place to stop and rest.
At the northern tip of the park stands Finland's longest fish ladder, designed to let migratory fish swim upstream from May through October. Most visitors walk right past it without realizing what it is.
