Paavo Nurmen kotimuseo, museo Turussa
Paavo Nurmen kotimuseo is a small house in Turku where the Finnish athlete lived during his childhood years. The building contains period furniture and household items that reflect family life in the early 1900s.
The Nurmi family bought the house in 1903 and initially lived in one room with a kitchen. In 1920, following Paavo's first Olympic victories, the family moved into the full apartment and gained electricity and running water.
The home reveals how a working-class family lived in Turku in the early 1900s and used their small space. The furniture and household items show the daily routines and close quarters where Nurmi spent his childhood.
The house is small and easy to walk through, but visiting requires advance arrangement as access is by appointment. The museum is located in central Turku and is accessible on foot.
Nurmi's father, a carpenter, built most of the furniture by hand, revealing how families crafted their homes themselves. These handmade pieces remain visible in the museum today and show the craftsmanship of that era.
