Relander memorial, Memorial and artwork in Etu-Töölö, Finland.
The Relander memorial consists of four red granite blocks, each roughly 2 meters wide, arranged in a square formation. Diagonal lines are carefully carved into the surfaces, creating a deliberate geometric pattern.
Artist Matti Peltokangas created this memorial in 1996 to honor Lauri Kristian Relander. Relander served as Finland's President during a period when the country established itself as a modern democracy.
The memorial uses Finnish red granite, a traditional material for important monuments across the country. This choice connects the work to a long-standing practice of creating lasting tributes with stone.
The memorial stands in Hesperia Park near Runeberginkatu street and is accessible to pedestrians year-round. The surroundings are flat and easy to explore on foot.
The carved diagonal lines on opposite faces of the blocks create a visual effect that shifts with your viewing angle and the changing daylight. This constant transformation gives the memorial a different appearance with each visit.
