Grands Mulets Hut, mountain hut
Grands Mulets Hut is a mountain shelter perched on a rocky outcrop in the French Alps above 3000 meters elevation. The sturdy structure accommodates about 68 guests and sits on the historic route to Mont Blanc, surrounded by glaciers and snowy peaks.
The original hut building was constructed in 1853 and replaced by a new structure in 1896. The current building dates from 1960 and stands on the route first used by Balmat and Paccard during their 1786 first ascent of Mont Blanc.
The hut's name comes from the mules that once carried supplies along this route. Today it serves as a gathering place where mountaineers from around the world share experiences and prepare for their climb.
The journey typically takes three to four hours from Plan de l'Aiguille, crossing the Bossons Glacier. Visitors should travel with experienced mountaineers and prepare for rapid weather changes and crevasses, especially in fog.
The hut guardian brews specialty craft beer using ice from the nearby Bossons Glacier, which visitors can taste as a unique mountain memento. This unusual brewing practice shows creative adaptation to life in this extreme setting.
