Mont Maudit, Alpine summit in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France and Courmayeur, Italy.
Mont Maudit is an alpine summit standing at about 4,465 meters (14,645 feet) between Mont Blanc du Tacul and Mont Blanc along the France-Italy border. The peak forms part of the Mont Blanc massif and is accessed via the northwest ridge from Col du Mont Maudit.
The first ascent occurred in September 1878 by British climbers accompanied by Bernese guides. The peak later became significant in mountaineering history and continues to define how climbers understand this mountain range.
The name reflects the dangers climbers faced here due to frequent accidents and harsh weather that defined early mountaineering attempts. Visitors sense this history through the exposed and demanding terrain they encounter.
Technical climbing at this elevation demands experience and proper acclimatization before attempting the route. Climbers should verify their gear and prepare for rapid weather changes common at this altitude.
The Kuffner ridge extends roughly 1.6 kilometers along the southeast face with challenging climbing routes. This ridge system was established by mountaineers in the 1880s and remains less traveled than the main approach.
