La Barre-de-Monts

La Barre-de-Monts is a coastal commune stretching along the Atlantic shore with wide sandy beaches backed by the forest of Pays de Monts. The settlement borders both Bourgneuf Bay and open ocean, with working fishing ports and marinas scattered throughout.

The settlement evolved from a traditional fishing village into a maritime destination during the 20th century, preserving its small oyster port at Fromentine. This transformation allowed the place to grow through boat traffic and seasonal visitors.

The Écomusée du Marais Vendéen displays exhibits about marsh life and local traditions, where visitors can watch demonstrations of salt harvesting, traditional food preparation, and craft methods still practiced in the region.

The place works best as a base for boat trips to Noirmoutier and Yeu islands, with water sports and beach activities available throughout summer months. Plan your visit accordingly, as most facilities and services peak during warmer seasons.

The Port du Pont Neuf offers direct views toward both Noirmoutier and Yeu islands from the water, while the stone steps of Pey de la Blet provide forest-framed views from above the shoreline. These two viewpoints reveal quite different perspectives on the surrounding coastal landscape.
