Etang d'Urbino, Coastal lagoon in Ghisonaccia, France
The Étang d'Urbino is a coastal water body in Ghisonaccia covering roughly 790 hectares, divided by the Isola Longa peninsula into two distinct zones. The site contains shallow waters, reed beds, and open areas that support a range of aquatic habitats.
For generations, the lagoon supported traditional fishing and oyster farming, activities that shaped local life until contamination issues led to their suspension in 2016. These practices had been central to the area's economy and culture for a long time before that change.
The site draws bird watchers and nature lovers who come to observe migratory species passing through seasonal cycles. People walk the paths to experience the rhythm of this wetland and see how different animals share the landscape.
The site is open year-round with free access and walking paths around the water for observation. Bring binoculars and plan visits for early morning or late afternoon when wildlife is most active.
A nesting platform of about 200 square meters was built in 2016 to support protected bird species in raising their young successfully. This conservation effort shows concrete work to maintain and strengthen the natural diversity found here.
