In Strasbourg, each step spans several centuries. One moves from an old medieval alley with half-timbered houses to a modern glass building representing Europe's present. The cathedral has watched over the city for a thousand years; the banks of the Rhine tell of an openly lived modernity that looks towards Germany. The city blends the sound of bells with the noise of streetcars, the aroma of gingerbread with the glass of European institutions. Between museums, bridges, parks, and markets, Strasbourg combines remembrance and activity: it is observed, but also experienced. Here are some places that shape it, from Gothic to steel design, from the silence of churches to the liveliness of terraces.
Alsace features historical monuments, medieval castles, and specialized museums between Strasbourg and Mulhouse. This region includes military fortresses, historic districts with half-timbered houses, technical museums, and religious sites. Visitors can explore Romanesque and Gothic buildings, Vauban fortifications, art collections, and natural areas. The architectural heritage reflects the regional history from the Middle Ages to the present.
The villages of Alsace feature typical medieval architecture with colorful half-timbered houses, ramparts, and castles on the surrounding hills. These wine-growing localities maintain their cobblestone streets, market squares, and Romanesque religious buildings. The historic centers include buildings from the Middle Ages such as watchtowers, town halls, and churches decorated with sculptures. The region also houses historical collections, notably medieval manuscripts.
