Angoulême Cathedral, Romanesque cathedral in Angoulême, France
Cathédrale Saint-Pierre is a Romanesque cathedral with an imposing front decorated with more than 70 stone reliefs. These reliefs show religious themes like the Ascension and the Last Judgment and shape the building's appearance from the outside.
Construction began in 1105 with three main domes shaping the skyline from then on. After the Protestant siege in 1568, the building underwent major changes and was later restored.
The cathedral walls display stone carvings showing medieval scenes and religious moments that still reflect the everyday life of that time. These carvings tell the story of the people who lived and prayed here, bringing the past to life.
The cathedral is centrally located in Angoulême and is easy to reach if you are in the old town. The building still functions today as the bishop's seat and has regular opening hours for visitors.
The interior is remarkably plain without side aisles, which creates a sharp contrast to the heavily decorated outside. This unexpected contrast between outside and inside surprises many visitors when they enter the building.
