City walls of Angoulême

The City walls of Angoulême are stone fortifications that encircle the hilltop city center and stretch for several kilometers around it. Walking along the walls reveals views across the Charente River valley and the countryside beyond.

These fortification walls were first built in the 13th century to protect the city. Significant reinforcements were added in the 16th century that shaped their current form.

Each year the Circuit des Remparts auto race runs portions of its track along the ancient fortification walls, blending medieval architecture with contemporary motorsport. This unusual event demonstrates how a historical structure remains actively used in modern city life.
