Château d'Aubenas, Medieval castle in Aubenas, France.
Château d'Aubenas is a castle perched on a limestone outcrop in Aubenas, featuring a 26-meter (85 ft) square keep and two round towers commanding views of the Ardèche valley. The fortress underwent a seven-year renovation and now functions as a Contemporary Art Center.
The castle was occupied by six noble families starting in the 12th century, each adding architectural changes that shaped the fortress over time. Control of the site changed after the French Revolution, ending its role as a noble residence.
The castle displays Italian Renaissance features such as an arcaded courtyard that echoes the style of Tuscan palaces. Visitors can observe these southern influences in the design of the loggias and covered walkways.
Visiting the fortress involves climbing stairs and navigating pathways, so comfortable footwear is recommended. The hilltop location allows visitors to take in views of the surrounding landscape during their visit.
The fortress preserves a medieval cistern system that once supplied water to the occupants. Inside the Maubec tower sits a well-preserved spiral staircase dating from the 15th century with stone steps carved into the walls.
