Palais des Sports, Concert venue in 15th arrondissement, France
Palais des Sports is a multi-purpose hall in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, recognizable by its domed roof structure. The interior extends across several levels and provides space for audiences who look down on the central stage from different heights.
Pierre Dufau designed the building in the late 1950s to give Paris a modern venue for larger crowds. Completion came in 1960 and brought a new form of entertainment architecture to the French capital.
The hall takes its name from an era when sports events were held more often than they are today. Parisians now use the space mainly for concerts and stage shows that often sell out across several evenings.
The hall sits on Boulevard Victor in the southwestern part of the 15th arrondissement, close to Porte de Versailles. Visitors reach the entrance on foot within a few minutes from the surrounding metro stations.
The dome rests on a structure of prefabricated concrete shells that were considered a technical advance in the 1960s. This construction method allowed large spans to be achieved without interior supports.
