Château de Losse, Renaissance château in Thonac, France

Château de Losse is a Renaissance castle in Thonac positioned above the Vézère River, featuring defensive towers, surrounding moats, and passages built beneath ground level. The building combines military structures with Renaissance architectural elements constructed during the 16th century.

The castle began as a medieval fortress and underwent transformation into a Renaissance residence during the 16th century. This renovation kept many defensive features in place rather than removing them entirely.

The château preserves original period furnishings and decorative elements throughout its rooms, allowing visitors to see how Renaissance families arranged their living spaces. These interiors reveal daily practices and tastes of the era through objects and arrangements that remain on display.

Visitors can explore the castle and gardens from April through November with guided tours offered in multiple languages. Plan sufficient time to see both the interior rooms and the outdoor spaces without rushing.

The grounds around the castle feature elevated terraces designed in Renaissance style and recognized for their particular merit. These terraced levels offer expansive views across the Vézère River valley below.
