The Vézère Valley contains fifteen decorated caves with extensive networks of passages displaying paintings and engravings from the Upper Paleolithic period.
Discovered in 1940, the Lascaux Cave system reveals over 2,000 prehistoric figures painted on its walls, dating back approximately 17,000 years.
The caves demonstrate early human artistic development through representations of animals, geometric patterns, and human figures created using natural pigments and rock carving techniques.
Visitors can access guided tours of several caves, including Rouffignac Cave which features an electric train system for comfortable exploration of the ancient artwork.
The Font-de-Gaume Cave preserves 230 polychrome paintings of bison, horses, and reindeer, executed in black, red, and brown mineral pigments.
