Abbaye Notre-Dame de Donezan, Benedictine abbey in Carcanières, France
The Abbey of Notre-Dame de Donezan is a Benedictine monastery situated on high ground in the Ariège department, sitting at about 1,350 meters elevation above surrounding villages. The community occupies land on the Mourouscles Plateau, where the remote location provides the setting for contemplative practice and monastic daily routine.
The monastery was founded in 2007 when a monastic community from another location discovered the region and purchased property in the Donezan area. This establishment created a new monastic presence in this mountain region of the Pyrenees.
The monastic community maintains the Rule of Saint Benedict through daily services in Latin and Gregorian chant, shaping the rhythm of life at this retreat.
Visitors can attend daily services such as Mass and Vespers to experience the rhythm of monastic life. Contact the abbey directly for specific visiting times and any other practical arrangements you may need.
The monks produce cheese that has earned recognition in regional competitions, bearing the name of the local region. This craft tradition ties monastic practice to the practical work that sustains the community.
