Château de Montdardier, Medieval castle in Montdardier, France

Château de Montdardier is a stone fortress situated on a hilltop overlooking the Glèpe valley, featuring Gothic Revival elements and defensive structures built across different periods. The buildings blend medieval foundations with architectural details added later, creating a composition that shows how the castle evolved over time.

The castle was founded in the 13th century, reflecting the medieval architecture of that era. During the 1860s, architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc undertook major restoration work, reconstructing medieval features based on historical knowledge.

The coat of arms of the Ginestous de Montdardier family, showing a rampant lion, is carved above the main entrance and tells of the noble lineage connected to this place. These carved symbols on the walls give visitors a window into the world of local aristocracy that once shaped the region.

The castle is private property and visitors must arrange visits in advance. It sits in a rural location in the Cevennes region and is best reached by car.

From the castle, clear views extend all the way to Mont Ventoux, the famous peak in Provence. This vantage point also marks the historical boundary between the landscapes of the Cevennes and the Causse de Blandas.
