Chateau de Castelnau-de-Lévis, Medieval fortress in Castelnau-de-Lévis, France
The castle stands on a rocky peak with a 40-meter-high rectangular watchtower that overlooks the Tarn valley and the city of Albi.
Built in 1235 by Sicard Alaman under Count Raymond VII of Toulouse, the fortress served as a strategic outpost north of the Tarn River.
The remaining structures contain several rooms with decorative paintings from the 16th century, reflecting the architectural preferences of French nobility.
The castle grounds are open to visitors without entrance fees, though access to the summit of the watchtower remains restricted for safety reasons.
The fortress features an unusual architectural combination of a rectangular tower connected to a semicircular structure with lookout posts at each level.
