Chateau de Castelnau-de-Lévis

Chateau de Castelnau-de-Lévis is a fortress perched on a rocky peak that surveys the valleys and towns below. The main tower rises prominently alongside partially preserved walls and structural remains that form an interesting complex of construction from different periods.

The fortress was founded in the mid-13th century as a key control point for the region. It underwent several reconstruction phases and changes of ownership before eventually becoming a ruin.

The remaining walls show traces of decorations from past centuries, revealing how people of means once designed their living spaces. Walking through the ruins allows you to sense the daily rhythms that once unfolded here.

Visitors can freely explore the outer grounds and accessible floors of the fortress to view the structures and surroundings. The terrain is steep in places and surfaces are uneven in parts, so sturdy footwear and careful footing are advised.

The tower combines a rectangular form with an adjoining semicircular section, an unusual combination rarely seen elsewhere. This dual structure provided both defense and multiple vantage points to monitor the surrounding land.
