Château de Messac, Laroquebrou

Château de Messac is a residential fortress in Laroquebrou with two wings arranged at right angles around a central staircase tower. The interior spans multiple floors and features stone fireplaces throughout the building.

Construction began in the late 15th century when Amaury and Guy de Sermur directed its building as a civil residence in Cantal. The structure underwent modifications across the 14th, 15th, and 18th centuries as tastes and needs evolved.

The castle represents the architectural evolution from medieval to renaissance periods, with modifications made during the 14th, 15th, and 18th centuries.

The building has been protected since 1972 for its exterior walls, roofing, and interior chimneys. Visitors should approach with care given its status as a safeguarded historical monument.

Each floor contains two large stone fireplaces, revealing the priority placed on heating in medieval residential buildings. This double-fireplace arrangement on every level was uncommon and suggests the original owners' wealth.
