Château de Novel, Medieval castle in Annecy, France.

Château de Novel is a medieval castle in Annecy featuring a rectangular stone structure with a distinctive round tower at its southwest corner. The walls retain remnants of the original defensive fortifications that once protected the stronghold.

The fortress began in the 12th century as a stronghold for the Counts of Geneva, who relocated to Château d'Annecy in 1219. Following the French Revolution, it passed into religious hands and later served agricultural purposes.

The castle served for centuries as a convent for the Visitation order, whose religious community shaped how the space was used and organized. The layout and architecture still reflect traces of this spiritual chapter in the building's design.

The castle is located on Avenue de Novel and can be reached by various transportation options including bus routes and nearby parking. It sits conveniently positioned for visiting other attractions throughout Annecy.

In 1174, Count Amédée I of Geneva signed a major agreement here under the mediation of Bishop Saint Anthelme of Belley. This accord represented an important political moment in the region and illustrates the castle's role as a place where significant negotiations took place.
