Cité de la Mer

Cité de la Mer is a maritime museum housed in a former transatlantic ship terminal at Cherbourg's harbor, featuring exhibits on submarines and ocean exploration. The building spans multiple levels with aquariums, ship models, and interactive displays about deep-sea discovery and marine technology.

The museum opened in 2002 inside a building that originally served as a departure terminal for transatlantic passenger ships. Cherbourg's harbor has centuries of maritime history and was already an important port facility during medieval times.

The submarine Le Redoutable demonstrates how French engineers built naval vessels and how crews operated in confined underwater spaces. Walking through its narrow corridors reveals the daily work stations of sailors and the practical challenges of subsurface life.

Plan to spend several hours exploring all the exhibits and boarding the submarine, as the museum covers many different areas and sections. The facility is accessible with ramps and elevators connecting the different levels throughout the building.

The submarine Le Redoutable is part of one of Europe's largest submarine collections and visitors can actually board and explore it from the inside. This offers a rare chance to see how naval vessels were mechanically designed and operated in confined spaces.
