Gros-Cerveau, Mountain summit in Var, France
Gros-Cerveau is a summit in the Monts Toulonnais between Ollioules and Sanary-sur-Mer, reaching 429 meters in elevation. The mountain features ten developed rock climbing areas and is crossed by the GR51 long-distance hiking trail.
Two military fortifications, including the Fort du Gros Cerveau, were built on the ridge between 1890 and 1900 under General Séré de Rivières. These installations were part of a broader coastal defense strategy.
The name comes from Provençal 'lou Grand Cervèu', where 'cervèu' means a stag rather than the French word for brain. This linguistic heritage remains part of the local identity and landscape naming.
The climb is accessible via well-marked trails that typically take between 1.5 and 2 hours depending on your route. Visitors should bring sturdy footwear and water, as the trails can be exposed to the sun.
An astronomical observatory on the summit underwent expansion in 2017 and offers stargazing activities year-round. This scientific facility creates an unexpected contrast with the military fortifications that also stand on the ridge.
